Manufacturers self-test barriers, omit payload penetration distances, and blur the line between retired Department of State K-ratings and the current ASTM F2656 standard. A barrier marketed as “K12” may have stopped the truck — or let its cargo bed travel thirty meters past the line it was supposed to hold. NPSI exists to make that difference impossible to hide.

Under ASTM F2656, the impact condition (M30, M40, M50) describes the test vehicle and speed. The penetration rating (P1–P4) describes how far the threat actually traveled past the barrier. Both halves are required to understand performance. Marketing that quotes one without the other is incomplete by design.
